Sandy Historical Research Group was formed in late 2001, in order to capture the history of this Bedfordshire market town during the last 150 years or so (and further back where possible).
A number of projects have been undertaken - some completed, others in progress. We are on a mission to achieve a museum for the town and we are in discussion with Sandy Town Council regarding options and possibilities. Click here to see our chairman talking about some recent finds in Sandy, which could be displayed in a town museum but are currently destined for Bedford. The group has also been in discussion with AOC regarding the archeological dig being carried out on the new Tesco store development in New Road.
This website was set up to promote the group's activities and also invite contributions from interested parties.
The group also produces a Newsletter twice a year (Spring & Autumn and FREE to members) - "SHRUB". This is full of articles written by members and supporters, about the history of Sandy and its residents over the last 150 years or so. Back copies are available @ £1, in hard copy and shortly in PDF format for download. The current Spring & Autumn editions are £2. All can be posted for an additional £1 per copy. For back copies or if you are not yet a Member of SHRG, please email Sandy Historical Research Group and we will organise delivery to you.
Sandy Historical Research Group published the first volume of 'Pictorial Memories of Sandy' in 2007. The book contains 40 views and images depicting the life of Sandy, dating back in some cases to the turn of the 20th century and up to the 1950's/ early 1960's. There are still some copies available.
The second volume of 'Pictorial Memories of Sandy' was published in November 2009 and both are available online, from any Committee Member, or from Sandy Tourist Information Centre.
Click here for more details about 'Pictorial Memories of Sandy Volume 2'. We also have a Special Offer (while stocks last), for Volumes 1 & 2 together - see the Books & Memorabila page for more details.
Projects:
The Members Area is now closed and has been replaced by a Forum, which enables you to post items of local interest, ask questions about Sandy's history (NB: Sandy Historical Research Group are unable to answer genealogy/Family Tree questions but you may find that others viewing your request, have some of the answers you need). For those of you who have registered previously, please note that you will need to re-register in order to post messages.
We also now have a Blog. Here, you can find out how the group is progressing with its' various projects (and post comments or your own articles).
If you have any information about the history of Sandy, or something specific about any of the above projects, then please get in touch via a Committee Member. Or, email SHRG.
The group presents several exhibitions of some of its collection of old photo's and artefacts each year. We are continuing supporting these occasions, which will often be in conjunction with other local events such as Sandy Summer Festival day and the Sandy Horticultural Show.
Go to the Diary Section for news of the next scheduled event.
